Ride vs the Equilab horse riding app

Equilab is a well-known riding tracker: about 5,200 ratings on the US App Store, and over a million riders by its own count.[1][2] Ride is a newer iPhone app for trail riders: it records a trail ride with no signal and shows you trails other riders have ridden. This page is written by the team that makes Ride. Here is where each app is stronger.

Pick Ride if you trail ride, want a recording that keeps going with no signal and a locked phone, want to see trails other riders have ridden, or want a ride log and care reminders for each horse.

Pick Equilab if you want gait analysis, a large riding community, an Android app, or live location sharing with someone at home while you ride.

Trail rides with no signal

Ride

Tap Start Trail Ride, lock your phone and ride. GPS keeps recording out of cell range, and the ride syncs when you have signal again. Share a ride as an image or a link.

Equilab

Records GPS rides with speed, distance and elevation.[3] Its listing doesn't say how recording behaves with no signal, so check before a remote ride.

Finding trails

Ride

The Trails tab maps public trail rides from other riders, with rider answers on difficulty, whether it is horse-legal, and trailer parking. Planning a trip? Start with horse trails in California and horse camping in California.

Equilab

Has trail maps, and lists searching, filtering and sharing trails as a Premium feature.[4]

Your horses

Ride

A profile for every horse, with farrier, supplements, vaccines and injections on due dates and reminders. Free keeps 1 horse; Ride Pro adds unlimited horses.

Equilab

The free version tracks rides for multiple horses, per a 2022 magazine review.[5] Premium adds statistics and trends graphs.[4]

Price

Ride

Free to record and log rides, with your full ride history. Ride Pro is $5.99 a month or $29.99 a year in the US, with a 1-month free trial for eligible new subscribers.

Equilab

Free version plus Premium at $12.99 a month or $99.99 a year in the US App Store.[1] Its website lists $11.99 and $89.99.[4]

Meeting people to ride with

Ride

Follow riders you know, with kudos and comments. Find meetups on the map and join free, with group chat. Ride Pro riders can host one.

Equilab

Chat with other riders, join groups and share calendars.[1]

Ads and privacy

Ride

No ads, and we never sell your data. The start and end of every route are trimmed, and Hide map keeps a route on your phone only.

Equilab

Premium live location sharing lets contacts you choose see where you are while you ride.[1]

Forgot to press start

In Ride, log a ride after the fact, backdate it, and edit it later.

Arena riders

Ride keeps arena tools: save routines and run them as a live timed session, with a time for every maneuver. Equilab's App Store listing doesn't list riding disciplines.[1]

Recording and logging rides (even with no signal), your full ride history, stats, the feed, following riders, viewing the Trails map near you, joining meetups and 3 months of ride-time charts are free. Free keeps 1 horse and 1 saved routine. Ride Pro, an optional subscription, opens any trail and searches any area, lets you save and follow trails, host meetups, and adds unlimited horses and routines and charts over a year and all time.
