Ride

Privacy Policy

Last updated 25 October 2026

Ride is a training log for horse riders, with an optional social side: riders can follow each other and see each other's logged rides. This policy explains what information the app collects, how it is used, who can see it, and your choices around it.

Information we collect

Account information. An account is required to use the app. When you sign in with Sign in with Apple, we receive a unique identifier for your account and, if you choose to share them, your name and email address. If you use Apple's Hide My Email option, we receive only the private relay address Apple generates — never your real one. We never see or store your Apple password.

Your rider profile. A display name, initials, and a ring colour you pick for yourself; a unique @handle, which the app requires you to choose before you can use it; and, optionally, a short bio and a profile photo.

Your horses. For each horse you add: name, and optionally breed, birth year, discipline, and a photo.

Your rides. For each ride you log: which horse, discipline, duration, optional distance, the date and time, an optional name, any free-text note you write, and an optional photo. If you record the ride's route, its moving time, the shared version of the route and the ride's place name are saved with it too, as described next.

Location, only during a Trail Ride you start. The app uses your device's location only during a Trail Ride, which you start yourself with the Start Trail Ride button. A plain session never uses location. It asks iOS for location permission when you tap Start Trail Ride — never at launch — and only for access while you are using the app; it never asks for “Always” access. While that ride is recording, the app collects your precise GPS location, including while the screen is locked (iOS shows a location indicator the whole time), and it stops when you finish or discard the ride. It does not access your location at any other time, and if you decline the permission, you can still start a session or log the ride without a route.

The full set of recorded GPS points stays on your device, where it is used to work out the ride's distance and moving time; it is never uploaded. When you save the ride, a simplified version of the route is uploaded with it, with roughly the first and last 200 metres cut off — by a different, randomly varied amount on each ride — so the shared route does not show exactly where you set off or finished, such as your barn or your home. If you turn on Hide map when saving a ride, no route is uploaded for that ride at all: its distance and times are still saved, and the route stays only on your device.

A place name for each Trail Ride. When you finish a Trail Ride, the app suggests a place name for it — a named area such as a park, forest or trailhead, or otherwise just the town or county and state — never a street address or house number. To find it, the app sends a point at or near where the ride began to Apple's map service. You can keep the name, change it — suggestions from Apple Maps appear as you type, which sends what you type to Apple — type your own, or clear it. The name is saved with the ride and shared with it, as described below.

Goals and horse health records. Goals are free text with a progress value. Health records are notes about your horse — soundness, farrier visits, and supplements — with an optional date. These describe the animal, not you; the app does not collect human health data and does not connect to Apple Health.

Show events. Event name, date, an optional location you type in, and discipline. The location field is free text you enter yourself — events never use your device's location.

Photos you choose to add. Profile, horse and ride photos come from your photo library, or from your camera if you choose to take one, only when you ask for them. The app requests photo or camera access from iOS at that moment and receives only the single image you select or take — never your photo library as a whole. Photos are uploaded to our hosted storage. Photos are served from public web addresses: anyone who has the link to an image can open it, without signing in. The links are long and unguessable and are not published anywhere, but treat a photo you upload as something that can be seen outside the app, and don't upload anything you would not want shared.

Who you follow, and who follows you. Following another rider creates a record linking your account to theirs. Follow requests, accepted follows, and follower/following counts are stored on our servers.

Kudos and comments. If you leave kudos or a comment on a ride, that content is stored with your account and is visible to everyone who can see that ride, including the rider who logged it.

Blocks and reports. If you block a rider, we store that pairing so we can enforce it. If you report a rider or a comment, we store the report — what was reported, who reported it, and any reason you give — so a human can review it.

Search. Searching for riders sends the text you type to our servers to match against handles and display names. We do not build a profile of your searches.

Purchases. If you subscribe to Ride Pro, the purchase is made through Apple, which handles your payment details; we never see them. Our subscription provider, RevenueCat, receives your purchase history — which subscription you have, when it started, renews or ends — linked to your account ID, so the app can unlock Pro on your devices and we can see subscription totals.

Apart from those purchase records, we do not collect analytics, advertising identifiers, crash-reporting data, or usage-tracking data of any kind. The one third-party SDK in the app is RevenueCat's, which handles subscriptions only and does not observe what you do in the app. If you allow notifications, the app also registers your device with Expo's push service, as described next.

Notifications. If you allow notifications, we store a push token for your device, linked to your account, so we can tell you about activity involving you: comments and kudos on your rides, new followers and follow requests, and new rides from riders you follow. These are delivered through Expo's push service and Apple Push Notification service, which receive the push token and the notification's text — for example, the other rider's handle and the start of their comment. We also keep a record of each of these events, which you see in the app's activity list, and your notification settings. You can turn each type of notification off in Account → Notifications, or turn all of them off in iOS Settings; this stops the push but the activity list still shows the event. Push tokens are deleted when you sign out and when you delete your account. Reminders you set up in the app are still scheduled locally by iOS, and no reminder information is transmitted anywhere.

Who can see your data

Your profile is public by default. Any signed-in rider can find you by handle or name and see your profile and your logged rides, along with the horses, kudos and comments attached to them. You can switch your profile to private at any time in the app, after which only riders whose follow request you have accepted can see that content. Your handle, display name, initials, ring colour and profile photo remain visible either way, so that riders can find you and decide whether to request a follow.

Recorded routes follow the ride. The trimmed route saved with a ride is shown on that ride's map and in feeds to exactly the riders who can see the ride — any signed-in rider while your profile is public, or only your accepted followers while it is private. Turn on Hide map for any ride whose route you would rather not share; the route then stays on your device. A Trail Ride's place name is shown with the ride to the same riders; you can change or clear it on the ride at any time.

Goals, horse health records and show events are yours alone and are never shown to other riders.

Nobody outside the app sees your data. We do not publish it, sell it, or make it available to search engines — with the single exception of photos, whose public web addresses are described above.

How your data is stored

Your data is stored in our hosted database, and photos in our hosted storage, both run by Supabase. The app also keeps a copy on your device of what it needs to work without a signal — your horses, your own recent rides, and the app's reference lists — so that you can log a ride offline; it uploads when you are back online. The full GPS points of any route you record are kept only on your device. Other changes, including edits to your profile, horses, goals, health records and events, and anything social, need a connection.

How we use your information

  • To operate the app's core functionality — storing and displaying your horses, rides, goals, health records, and events
  • To show your rides to the riders you have allowed to see them, and to show you theirs
  • To record a ride's route during a Trail Ride you start, work out its distance and moving time, and show the trimmed route on a map to the riders who can see that ride
  • To let riders find and follow each other by handle or name
  • To keep your data available across your own devices
  • To schedule the reminders you configure, locally on your device
  • To send you notifications about activity involving you, for the types you have left on
  • To unlock Ride Pro for riders who subscribe, and to see subscription totals
  • To review reports and enforce blocks, so the app stays usable

We do not use your data for advertising, and we do not sell your data to anyone.

Safety and moderation

Every rider can report a comment or a rider, and can block a rider. A block is enforced on our servers: it removes both follow directions, hides each rider's content from the other, prevents either from following the other again, and removes each from the other's search results.

Reports go to a queue that we review, and we are committed to acting on reports of objectionable content — removing the content, and suspending or removing the responsible account where warranted — within 24 hours of the report. Continued use of the app requires agreeing to the Terms of Use, which prohibit objectionable content and abusive behaviour.

Who we share data with

We share data only with the four service providers that make the app work:

  • Apple — Sign in with Apple authentication; delivery of push notifications to your device through Apple Push Notification service; and the map under a recorded route (Apple Maps), which loads map imagery for the area the route covers; and Apple Maps place search, which receives a point near a Trail Ride's start and any text you type into its Location field, to suggest the ride's place name
  • Expo — delivers push notifications to Apple: your device's push token and the notification's text
  • Supabase — hosts our database, our photo storage, and authentication sessions
  • RevenueCat — processes Ride Pro subscriptions: your purchase history, linked to your account ID

Each is contractually bound to provide the same or equal protection of your data as described in this policy, and processes it under its own privacy policy only to the extent needed to provide its service to us. The app has no other third parties: no analytics vendor, no advertising network, no AI service.

Other riders are not third parties in this sense — what they can see is described under “Who can see your data”, and it is under your control.

Data retention and deletion

Your data is retained for as long as your account exists.

You can delete your account at any time from within the app: Account → Delete Account. This permanently deletes your account and everything associated with it — your rider profile and handle, your photos, horses, rides and their routes, goals, health records, events, follows, kudos, comments, activity notifications, notification settings and push tokens — from our database and storage. Deletion is immediate and cannot be undone. Reports you have filed about other riders are also deleted; reports other riders have filed about you may be retained for as long as needed to act on them.

Purchase records held by Apple and RevenueCat are kept as long as needed for billing, refunds and tax; after your account is deleted they are tied only to an account ID that no longer identifies you.

You can also remove the on-device copy, including any recorded GPS points, at any time by deleting the app.

Our website

Our website, rideapp.app, uses Umami, a cookieless analytics service, to count visits. It records the page you view, the site that linked you there, any campaign tags in the link, clicks on the download button, and your browser, device type and approximate location derived from your connection. It sets no cookies, stores nothing on your device, keeps no personally identifiable information, and never links a visit to your Ride account. None of this happens inside the app.

Children's privacy

Ride is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect information from children under 13.

Changes to this policy

We may update this policy as the app changes. Material changes will be reflected here with an updated date above.
